But before we get started, let’s talk a bit about yoga. What is yoga? In Sanskrit (an ancient Indo-European language), the word yoga means “yoke” or “union”. Yoga has been practised for thousands of years already! It brings together a number of different techniques: âsanas (postures or poses), pranayamas (breathing exercises), meditation and relaxation. It is a philosophy aiming to unite all the aspects of our being: physical, energetic, emotional, mental and spiritual. With yoga, we seek to establish a balance both within ourselves and with that which surrounds us: other living beings, the environment, the universe or something even greater.
As we follow the yoga trail, I will be suggesting some poses linked to the environment (landscapes, smells, animals, natural elements) for you to practise. Below the illustration of each pose, you will find its name in Sanskrit along with its common name in English – with some minor adaptations to the local flora and fauna!
As you perform the movements, remain mindful of what is going on inside you. Pay attention to how you feel in each pose: are you restless, concentrated, calm, strong, full of courage, happy? How does your breathing feel within your body? Is it fast, slow, deep or obstructed? It is important to listen to your body, to breathe and to abandon the pose if you experience any pain or discomfort. Practising yoga without the advice of a yoga teacher is not recommended if you have any particular physical problems.
Are you ready for an adventure? To prepare for our journey, let’s start by drawing in energy via the warrior pose (go to Station 1).
Our thanks go to Johanne Haari (yoga teacher) and the Chandolin tourism promotion office (SD Chandolin) for designing this trail as well as to Irène Duvaud (for the illustrations).
